While we aspire to match the academic standards of the best architectural schools across the globe and incorporate cutting-edge thinking in architectural pedagogy and practice, we also seek to install in our students, a strong sense of social engagement, environmental responsibility and professional ethics. With a foundational belief in design as a “Critical Practice” that can generate “public good” in the world, we take issue with the increasing instrumentality and commodification of architectural knowledge, education and production. We envision our graduates to be fully aware of the social, economic, political and cultural dynamics that shape the production of the built environment and to engage with them critically and innovatively in multiple scales from single buildings and construction details to large urban interventions. We pledge to educate the next generation of competent, creative and critical design professionals who can challenge the received conventions and fashionable trends of their discipline and are as interested in defining problems as they are in solving them. We conceptualize Architecture not just as a skill-based Profession but as a broader Humanistic Discipline. The Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department aims to train professionals who can conceptualize their designs through critical inquiry within contemporary theoretical frameworks, and prepare graduates who are equipped with the knowledge and technical skills required for realizing their designs at the level of universal standards, who have the confidence of designing and working independently, yet at the same time who have the ability to be a team member that are aware of their professional and ethical responsibilities. Along this path, materialization of the act of designing spaces, environmental analyses and identification of user needs and preferences through particapatory processes as well as their reflections on designs constitute the unique emphasis in the educational vision of the department. The curriculum, which is developed with a contemporary and interdisciplinary approach, is structured around the interior design studio as its center. Technical courses are given through hands-on applications within small group projects whereby computer aided design techniques and presentation techniques are encouraged. Department targets training designers who have the skills of questioning and perceiving the phenomenon of designing a wide spectrum that ranges from individual industrial product to architectural and urban scale, who have the sensitivity towards historical contexts and who can convert these sensitivities and awareness into creativity.
